PLAYLIST: Asian Underground Music Mix by Ritu Arya

Over the last few years, with each passing day, my love for all things Indian has only grown strong, tremendously strong. Indian textiles, Indian accessories, and the most important of all, influence of Indian music, Asian Underground Music to be precise.

Asian Underground, a terminology that stands for music created by infusing traditional Asian elements into western underground dance music, by the British Asian music artists. Prominently active since the 1997, the genre has innumerable beautiful numbers, all so soothing yet containing such strong emotions and force. Mostly because of the strong and meaningful lyrics, with equally striking music.

As essential as breathing, these tracks are an important part of my daily life. They stir a wave of bittersweet emotions within me. Each time. Even though I deeply enjoy these tracks, they give me a sense of unknown nostalgia, an aching longing. Probably something to do with my past life. [Nobody would know, for I only hold half minded belief in such concepts.] And yet, I find no other music more comforting and influential. When it comes to me writing, traveling or even the mere act of staring at the wall.

I have curated a playlist of [Part I, since I had to stop at some point for this one] of some of my all time favourite tracks of Asian Underground Music, each one of them a gem, hoping they give you the same treatment, leave you lost and restless.

  1. Hello,

I am a deep admirer of the Advaita Vedanta and I just looked at your playList. It looks very promising. But how do I get the music? I tried on Apple Music but to no avail. Sorry for being such an amateur in modern music downloading, but I am coming from acient times when we bought LPs in a store.
Thank you so much! If you like let us stay in touch. I am once in a while in India. Should you ever come to Munich let me know. I am in the board of the Indian Institut of Munich and we could arrange a lecture by you regarding modern design in India.
    Best regards
    Andreas

    1. Hi Andreas,

      Hope you’re doing well.
Thank you for showing interest. How did you like Playlist? 🙂

About the download, it might not be possible to find a couple of tracks for download since they are quite old, but almost all of them are available on iTunes. I would be more than happy to mail you all the links for direct download. Please send me your email id, and I shall send them as soon as possible, after collecting all the infos. Sharing music is pure joy. 🙂

And yes, would love to keep in touch and hopefully meet in the near future. And it would be even more honoring to be a part of anything that helps giving a wider global exposure to regional cultures/design/art etc.
